Mortar-light walling blocks that key into each other — the product behind Buildwell's overseas housing installations.
An interlocking block is designed to key into the blocks around it. Tongues and grooves on the faces align each course automatically, which means walls go up with very little mortar and with far less skilled labour than brick coursing requires.
That combination — low mortar, low skill, high speed — is why interlocking blocks are the product behind so much rapid and affordable housing work. Buildwell's overseas project photographs show exactly this: single-storey houses, community buildings and boundary walls built from stabilised interlocking blocks.
The BW-118 is Buildwell's dedicated interlocking block plant: a compact 21 HP line on a 15 × 30 foot bay, pressing 6,000 to 7,000 units a shift. The 3-in-1 machines can also be moulded for interlocking profiles where you want the product alongside bricks and pavers.
Soil or stone dust, fly ash and a cement or lime stabiliser are proportioned.
The pan mixer produces an even, correctly moist mix.
The interlock profile is formed under hydraulic pressure in a hardened mould.
Units are removed and stacked for curing.
Water curing develops strength before the blocks go to the wall.
